Hoppe's Conundrum

If I had a nickel for every time this has happened to me...

Let's say that there were one hundred starving people in front of you. And you were standing in front of a food table where decent meal costs one dollar and a meaningless bite of food costs 10 cents. And let's say you had $10. Would you give 10 people one dollar each so that they could buy a proper meal, or would you give all one hundred people 10 cents each? Or would you just pocket the $10?

I'd give 10 people a dollar each, and ask them to share their decent meal with 10 other people, so 20 people would each get half of a decent meal instead of a full decent meal or meaningless bite.

That is, provided I myself were not also starving. If so, I'd be one of the 10 getting a dollar and sharing with one other person.

I might also hold mini competitions among the 90 that did not get a dollar in order to choose which got the other half of my decent meal. I would encourage the other 9 that got a dollar to do this also. If I got this far without the other 90 realizing they could overpower us and take our money, I'd probably try charging other people with money some kind of admission to view the gladiatorial bouts I'd be running with the other 90.

I figure this way, at least 45 more of the 90 starving people left (those that survive) would then be able to share in this income. Of course I'd take 80 or 90 percent of the money raised as some kind of administrative fee first. But they would likely be able to then pay for a full decent meal as well as some liquor from the local vice shop.

I really love philosophical discourse.

1. Don't ask me how I know this, but starving people make for a poor gladiator bout. They are so listless!

2. Did you select "notify me of followup comments via email (I'm debugging...)

3. Are you doing nanowrimo this year?

You got me. I didn't previously select "Notify me of followup comments via e-mail."

I may be doing nanowrimo. It'd surely help to have someone else I know doing it to help keep me motivated.

You're doing it, right?

Oh yeah, I'm going to do it. This is the year. Before I do the hermit-writer thing for the month of November, I'm going to post details and say my goodbyes in a post next week.

I put my new web-page in the link this time. I may do it as well. I'd like to do the NaNoWriMo this year, but I have some programming commitments that takes up my spare time. There's always lunch hour at work I guess.

My username is mezzovitae, but I just 'added' you as a friend on my NaNoWriMo profile.

Guess we'll see what happens next Sunday.

Great, I look forward to sitting in the audience as you collect your Governor General's Literary Award!

I think I will give 3 dollars to 3 persons and will buy food of 1 $ for myself.
